You are bidding on a 1oz medallion that commemorates the sinking of the East India Merchant ship, The Grosvenor. The ship, which ran aground and sank on the Pondoland coast, near present day Port St John's with nearly 150 passengers on board on August 4, 1782. It was en route to England from Ceylon and was reputed to be carrying a fortune in diamonds and gems, as well the the fabled gold and ruby-studded Golden Peacock throne of Shan Jehan, (a royal chair made of solid gold outlined in precious stones) the Moghul emperor who built the Taj Mahal. The medallion is in superb condition. It depicts on the Obverse a picture of the Grosvenor and on the reverse a picture of the sinking of the ship. The date on the medallion is 1782, which is the year of the sinking.
