Explorer and artist. Born at King's Lynn, the son of a sea captain, he started painting coats of arms for a coachbuilder, from which he soon passed to landscape and other work. In 1842 he reached Cape Colony, where he taught drawing in Cape Town, until the outbreak of the War of the Axe in 1846 took him to the Eastern Frontier with the troops. His next headquarters were at Grahams-town. He saw further active service as an artist in 1848 and 1851, gaining a fine reputation for the vividness and liveliness of his drawings.
