Bridelia is a plant genus of the family Phyllanthaceae. This genus comprises approximately between 60 and 70 species, found from Africa, Australia and Asia. The genus Bridelia was named in the honor of Samuel Elisée Bridel-Brideri by the German botanist Carl Ludwig Willdenow. Bridelia cathartica commonly known as the Blou-soetbessie or Blue Sweet-berry is a South African indigenous species from the KwaZulu-Natal Province. It forms variable scrambling single- or many-stemmed much branched shrub or tree up to 7 meter tall. It has rough bark and tight clusters of small green to yellow flowers during summer.
