Breëblaar-witgat; Broad-leaved Shepherd Tree Boscia belongs to the caper family Capparaceae. Pickled capers are made from the unopened buds of European members of this family. The genus consists of about 8 species and was named for Louis Bosc (1759-1828), a French professor of agriculture who lived through the revolution. Boscia mossambicensis commonly known as Breëblaar-witgat in Afrikaans and Broad-leaved Shepherd Tree in English grows into and 6 meter shrub or small tree. It has grey-brown bark and leathery dark green large leaves. From autumn to winter it bears white flowers which are followed by round yellowish to red fruits. It is indigenous to South Africa where it can be found in the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. It was previously known as Boscia grandiflora, Boscia hildebrandtii and Boscia welwitschii.
