Wow, these are gorgeous winter growing and summer dormant flowering plants. Anemones bare beautiful flowers and if they are planted in pots they can be displayed indoors throughout winter! The blooms are always a colorful surprise when planted in groups in the flower garden. In the garden they bloom for several months and as a cut flower the individual stems will last for 7 to 10 days. Plant the bulbs in a rich soil with a lot of organic matter such as compost and manure. The bulbs will do best in a position that provides shade during the hottest part of the day.

Below the soil level they have small, hard, button-like tuberous rhizomes from which arise the flowers that are 5cm across and borne atop 20cm stems. Commonly known as Dutch Windflowers or French Anemone they have 6 – 8 petals and range in colour from white to blue, red and mauve; most with contrasting centre colours. They are related to the equally stunning Ranunculus and have similar requirements.

Anemones are seen to best advantage in a border. They may be grown in containers, provided that there is adequate drainage. The flowering time can be varied by planting in early or late autumn. Plant tubers with the pointed end downwards if it is discernible, otherwise on their side. Plant 8 to 10cm apart, covered by 2cm of soil. Using a bulb planting tool will help you to plant them at the correct depth. Well-drained sandy loam suits them best. Drainage must be good. A position that provides shade during the hottest part of the day is best. Anemones withstand frost well. The plants must be kept constantly moist at root level from planting-time onwards. Though, beware of water-logging which leads to rotting of the corms. To check the water content, a moisture probe may be used. It is advisable to water well and deeply in the morning every four or five days. If you are going to lift them from the soil when they go dormant it is a good idea to plant them in a Bulb Planter Tray to avoid damage and loss of bulbs. To ensure years of striking flowers from your Anemone bulbs it is recommended that you feed them with bulb food when planting and at two week intervals during the growing season.
