Crassula mesembryanthemoides Seeds

Crassula is a large genus of succulent plants containing many species, including the popular Jade Plant, Crassula ovata. They are native to many parts of the globe, but cultivated varieties are almost exclusively from the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Crassulas make the most wonderful pot plants. They can also be grown indoors as house plants. Those that make excellent house plants are the glossy leaf varieties. Crassulas, given a rich, well-drained medium will grow fast and luxuriantly.

Crassula mesembryanthemoides or Dew Bush; directly translated from the local Afrikaans common name, Doubossie grows to 40cm tall. Afrikaans is one of the 11 official languages of South Africa. It is a much-branched shrublet with hairy leaves which reflects sunlight, giving rise to its common name. The leaves are organized in rosettes which makes it look like a plant from the Aizoaceae family or Mesembryanthemum. This gave it the species name 'mesembryanthemoides' 'means looking like a Mesembryanthemum'. From autumn to winter it bears cream coloured flowers. The seeds of this indigenous South African crassula are best sown in spring. It prefers a shaded area in the garden but also makes an interesting container plant.
