Costa Rican Butterfly Vine, Bow Tie Vine, Purple Wings Vine

The Costa Rican Butterfly Vine seems to enchant anyone who sees it. It has slender, somewhat hairy stems, climbing to 1 to 6 meters. Set along these are large, nearly heart-shaped, toothed leaves. The more dramatic feature, however, is the flowering shoots. Each has a pair of broad, pointed, reddish purple bracts, 5 to 7.5 cm long, widely spreading above and below the clustered small, whitish flowers. Outstanding sized bracts with an eye-catching show of color characterize this vigorous growing vine. With a crepe-paper-type texture, violet pink bracts oppose each other in an open flat bloom, often reaching 12.5 cm in width. On a windy day, they appear to flutter in the breeze. In temperate climates they will bloom on and off all year. They require average watering and seem to enjoy dappled sun or light shade, particularly in summer when the sun really bears down. When the weather heats up they need to be watered much more frequently or they seem to burn. They are not invasive, and are twining so, require a trellis to climb. A beautiful plant and an asset to any garden, this vine will certainly bring a little whimsy to your garden. It also does very well in pots which makes it a great contender for patio space! It can provide all the colour of Bougainvillea without the mess and is cold hardy in temperatures that dip below minus 6° Celsius!
