Eriospermum is a genus of the family Eriospermaceae. The genus name is derived from the Greek words, erion for "wool" and sperma for "seed". Once you look at the seeds you can see why this name was given. The seeds of Eriospermum species are covered in a dense layer of white hairs.
Eriospermum cooperi is a widespread species found in many places in southern Africa. In South Africa it is found in arid areas of the Karoo, Eastern Cape and the Orange Free State in a variety of habitats. It is one of the biggest plants of the genus. The caudex can grow to seven centimeters in diameter, the leaves up to six centimeters in height. The flowers are white.
