Gazanias are mostly indigenous to the drier areas of South Africa such as the Western Cape and Namaqualand where their beautiful blooms open up to form lovely carpets of colour. Flowering all through the summer months, the daisy type flowers come in a wide variety of reds, oranges and yellows. They open up n the full sun, but close up in cloudy overcast weather. The fact that they are very hardy and require little water makes them perfect for planting in a rockery for a bit of colour and ideal for use in an indigenous waterwise garden.
Gazania rigens var rigens commonly known as Strandgousblom is a South African endemic species. It grows from 10-20cm tall forming a creeping perennial with green leaves and bright yellow flowers all year round. It is best sown in autumn.
