The name "Gibbaeum" comes from the latin "gibbosus" (=hunchback). These succulent plants growing in clumps are characterized by pairs of leaves mostly globular or sometimes thick and arcuate.

Also characteristic of the genus is two unequal leaves that are closely pressed together. The sizes of the leaves of a same pair are sometimes different. Gibbaeum is a genus of about 21 species in the Aizoaceae family. They produce offsets, sometimes covering up to 2 square meters.
