Grewia villosa Seed

Common Names: Round Leaf Grewia, Mallow-leaved Cross berry, Mallow raisin; Malvarosyntjie

The large flowering plant genus Grewia is today placed by most authors in the mallow family Malvaceae, in the expanded sense as proposed by in the APG. Formerly, it was placed in either the linden family (Tiliaceae) or the Sparrmanniaceae. However, these were both not monophyletic with respect to other Malvales - as already indicated by the uncertainties surrounding placement of Grewia and similar genera - and have thus been merged into the Malvaceae. Together with the bulk of the former Sparrmanniaceae, Grewia is in the subfamily Grewioideae and therein the tribe Grewieae, of which it is the type genus.

Grewia villosa commonly known as Round Leaf Grewia, Mallow-leaved Cross berry or Mallow raisin in English and Malvarosyntjie in Afrikaans is locally endangered in some parts of its distribution. Grows only in natural habitats in rock crevices. Last seen in Shimba Hills in Kenya and in Ein Gedi oasis in Israel, common in South Africa. Grewia villosa is a deciduous shrub to about 3 m with very distinctive leaves, young parts covered with pale silky hairs (villosa). Leaves almost round, to 12 cm across, opposite, on stalks to 4 cm; paler and more hairy below, 5 prominent veins. Flowers yellow-red-brown, in small clusters. Fruit soft and hairy when ripe, red brown, about 1 cm across, 1-2 seeds within each nut. The genus was named after Nehemiah Grew (1641-1712), one of the founders of plant physiology. The specific name is latin, meaning bearing long weak hairs. Flowering occurs in June-September in India whereas in South Africa fruit are ready in the April-May period.
