The generic name is derived from the Greek word á¼±βίσκος (hibískos), which was the name Pedanius Dioscorides (ca. 40-90) gave to Althaea officinalis.

Hibiscus praeteritus forms a tall, slender, erect shrub with small deeply toothed leaves with delicate pink to red flowers from spring to Autumn.
