Leucospermum conocarpodendron Seeds

Common Names: Grey Tree Pincushion; Vaalkreupelhout, Goudsboom

Leucospermum (Pincushion, Pincushion Protea or Leucospermum) is a genus of about 50 species of flowering plants in the family Proteaceae, native to Zimbabwe and South Africa, where they occupy a variety of habitats, including scrub, forest, and mountain slopes. They are evergreen shrubs (rarely small trees) growing to 0.5-5 m tall. The leaves are spirally arranged, tough and leathery, simple, linear to lanceolate, 2-12 cm long and 0.5-3 cm broad, with a serrated margin or serrated at the leaf apex only. The flowers are produced in dense inflorescences, which have large numbers of prominent styles, which inspires the name.

The grey tree pincushion is endemic to the Cape Peninsula where it is a conspicuous feature of the northern and western mountainsides. It makes a decorative garden shrub, often with an interesting bent shape, and it provides an unusual colour combination of greyish foliage and bright, golden yellow flowers. Leucospermum conocarpodendron subsp. conocarpodendron is relatively slow growing, yet produces its first flowers in its third year. This species makes an attractive garden shrub providing contrast with its grey foliage and flower colour from early spring until midsummer. It is a good cutflower that lasts well in a vase. It is grown for the cutflower trade, although its stems are a bit short and stout for it to make it big in the export market.
