Melianthus comosus or Kruidjie-roer-my-nie as it is commonly known in Afrikaans forms an eye-catching multi-stemmed shrub which is perfect for the low maintenance, water-wise garden. All parts of the plant produce a strong, unpleasant smell when bruised, hence the Afrikaans name. Traditionally Melianthus comosus leaves are used to treat ailments such as backache, rheumatism and septic wounds.

As the English common name, Honey flower, so justly points out, the plant’s flowers produce copious amounts of sweet nectar which will attract sunbirds and butterflies to the garden.
