Monarda citriodora has several common names including Lemon Beebalm, Lemon Horsemint, Plains Horsemint, Lemon Bee Balm, Lemon Bergamot, and Purple Horse Mint. It is a hardy annual or tender perennial native to the Midwest and southern United States. Lemon Mint is a long flowering wildflower with fragrant, curved, tubular flowers in purple to pink. It has the scent of lemon and is excellent as a bedding plant or in the butterfly garden or hummingbird garden. The small petals are white or lavender often dotted with purple and very aromatic with a pleasant, citrus aroma when the leaves are crushed. The leaves can be brewed for tea and, when crushed, can make an insect repellent. It also makes excellent cut flowers.
