The genus Monsonia was named after Lady Anne Monson, a botanist and collector of plants and insects. The genus Monsonia is in the family Geraniaceae. Monsonia emarginata commonly known as Dysentery Herb, Geita, Geitabossie, Gheita, Keitabossie, Naaldebossie, Rabas or Sambreeltjie is a South African indigenous species from the Eastern Cape and Western Cape Provinces. It is synonymously known as Geranium emarginatum, Monsonia ovata and Monsonia ovata var. biflora. It is said to be used to treat dysentery and insomnia and as a general stomach remedy. It grows from 10 cm to 25 cm tall and forms a sprawling perennial under semi shade conditions while growing into a denser shrub in full sun.
