Sparaxis is a genus in the Iridaceae family that is endemic to South Africa and found mostly in the southwestern Cape and the western Karoo. Sparaxis maculosa is a very rare and vulnerable South African endemic species from the Western Cape Province where it can be found growing in Fynbos on wet clay soils around Villiersdorp. It grows to a height of 20cm and in spring it bears showy purple and yellow flowers. Sparaxis is a winter-growing, summer-dormant genus. For this reason, plant the seeds or corms in autumn between late March and early June. Sparaxis is recommended for cultivation in both gardens and containers.
