Sparaxis is a genus in the Iridaceae family that is endemic to South Africa and found mostly in the southwestern Cape and the western Karoo. Sparaxis villosa is a South African endemic species from the Western Cape Province. It was previously known as Gladiolus bicolor, Gladiolus villosus, Ixia bicolor, Sparaxis bicolor, Synnotia bicolor and Synnotia villosa. It grows from 15cm to 35cm tall and is usually found growing in clay soils. In spring it bears fragrant yellow, white & mauve flowers. Sparaxis is a winter-growing, summer-dormant genus. For this reason, plant the seeds or corms in autumn between late March and early June. Sparaxis is recommended for cultivation in both gardens and containers.
