Tylecodon schaeferianus Seeds
Fairy Tale Plant
Tylecodon is a genus of succulent plants in the Crassulaceae family. Until the late 1970s all these plants were included in the genus Cotyledon, but in 1978 Dr Helmut Tölken of the South Australian Herbarium split them off into a genus of their own. The new name: "Tylecodon" was chosen as an anagram of the earlier name Cotyledon. Tylecodons generally lose their leaves during summer. From mid-autumn to early winter the new leaves are borne in spiral arrangements at the branch tips. The Tylecodon genus is very varied, ranging from dwarf succulents such as Tylecodon reticulatus to Tylecodon paniculatus, which may exceed two metres in height. They all well suited to being raised in rockeries and in pots. When grown in small pots their height can be controlled and they make interesting looking natural bonsai. Tylecodon schaeferianus is synonymously known as Adromischus hoerleinianus, Adromischus hoerleinianus var. schaeferi, Adromischus keilhackii, Adromischus schaeferianus, Adromischus schaeferianus var. keilhackii, Cotyledon hoerleiniana, Cotyledon hoerleiniana var. schaeferi, Cotyledon schaeferi, Cotyledon schaeferiana and Cotyledon sinus-alexandri. Tylecodon schaeferianus is a small perennial succulent species. It readily branches, producing egg-shaped succulent leaves which are clustered around the growing tip. Just as the leaves are falling off at the beginning of summer, pretty pink flowers appear and attract nectar-loving birds and insects in its native habitat. It makes for an excellent feature plant, perfect for rockeries, containers and water wise gardens. It also makes an interesting houseplant, growing well in bright sunlight and with little watering. Over time it forms gnarled stems with fissured, flaking bark, growing from tuberous roots. It has a caudex and is therefore termed a caudiciform plant.
