The Norwegian, Roald Amundsen was the first human to reach the South Pole on 14 December 1911 a mere 100years ago.In the process he passed a flag put up by the famed British Explorer Sir.Ernest Shackleton in 1907 only 97 miles away from the Pole.Although Shackleton never made it to the Pole he is given credit for opening up the route.
During the summer of 1914-1915, in an attempt to cross Antarctica, Shackelton’s ship became trapped and crushed in sea ice. In order to rescue his men, he crossed hundreds of miles of rough Antarctic Ocean in an open boat, surviving a hurricane that sunk a much larger ship. He landed on an uninhabited section of South Georgia Island, and then made a harrowing overland crossing to get to the nearest whaling station. In 2007 South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands issued a pair of 38.8mm copper-nickel 2 Pound coins portraying the great explorer. The first coin depicts Shackleton with two dogs and his ship. The second depicts him with his crew and their boats, stranded aboard an ice floe on New Years Eve 1914. With absence of any sort of other celebrations, the crew is captivated by Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights, dancing overhead. Queen Elizabeth is on the obverse of each coin.
