Encyclopedic in style, it is profusely illustrated and attractive. Its graphics convey a lot of the information and help compensate for the brevity of the text. The topics are presented at a rate of approximately five per page; therefore, the treatments are rather superficial. A small number of them are better developed within separate boxes, while occasional longer entries go into more detail, covering two full pages. The arrangement is chronological, and some entries include cross-references to related areas. A running time line along the bottom of the pages lists historical and cultural events happening at the same time as the scientific events.

This book is larger and includes more entries than typical "Eyewitness" titles, but provides generally less information per entry.
