The traditional source of pearls is saltwater molluscs. Freshwater mussels also produce pearls and China has harvested freshwater pearls since the 13th century, and has now become the world's undisputed leader in freshwater pearl production. The first record of pearls in China is from 2206 BC.
Freshwater pearls are not as round as saltwater pearls because they are not 'seeded', but are solid nacre making them more durable and resistant to chipping, wear, and degeneration.
They come in a wide variety of shapes and natural colours and are generally less expensive than saltwater pearls especially the non-round pearls, making them very popular with younger people and designers.
