Innovative Design Makes Vibrations Work for You

The "MAC" in MAC Powersphere by Burrows Golf stands for "magnitude amplification cavity."

Sounds fancy, and it is. An easier way of describing it might be to say that there's a hole in the sole, but that doesn't do justice to the properties that the inverted cone in the sole brings to the club.

Says 1981 British Open champion Bill Rogers, "I’ve been playing with it now over a year and the equipment is special. It’s different technology, it’s new and exciting."

The MAC Powersphere driver and fairway woods hit the scene at the 2003 PGA Merchandise Show, and the line has drawn nothing but good reviews since. The clubs are the brainchild of Bruce Burrows, founder of Burrows Golf, a small but growing company based in California.

The story behind the driver and its innovative design is this: Burrows was at a driving range on a cold day in 1995, hitting balls.

And as players frequently experience hitting hard range balls on cold days, Burrows' hands were feeling the sting of the vibrations running up the shaft of his club. That's when it hit Burrows: Vibration is just wasted energy. What if there was a way to keep that energy from being wasted? To keep it in the clubhead, where it could be transferred into the clubface and ball, rather than travelling up the shaft?

Eight years and much research later, Burrows Golf introduced the MAC Powersphere.

In the address position, the driver looks like any other driver. It's on the bottom of the club where the innovation is obvious. There, hollowed out of the sole, is a paper-thin titanium dome (inverted, so that it goes up into the clubhead). The dome's purpose is to take the vibrations created when the clubface and ball collide and reflect them back into the clubface and ball.

The benefits are twofold: First, far less vibration travels up the shaft, which can be a very soothing thing for golfers with sensitivity to that. Second - and this is the part Burrows Golf wants to get across to golfers - the entire clubface is made "hot" and more energy is transferred into the ball. Can you say "more distance?"

Bill Rogers can: "The sphere actually redirects the energy back into the face - what we describe as making the whole face hot. But the one thing I like as much about the club as anything is the drop off rate in distance on heel and toe hits is significantly less than any other club I’ve played."

But the innovation in the MAC Powersphere doesn't stop with the hole-in-the-sole. The company has also introduced a unique fitting system that allows green-grass pro shops to quickly get customers into the right specs.

The company calls it the Quick-Fit and Quick-Grip system. A MAC Powersphere Fitting Bag on display in a pro shop will include various shafts, heads and grips - enough to create 510 different variations of the club. Using the "Six-Point Driver Fitting System," parts can be swapped out to accomodate golfers in loft, face angle, shaft type, shaft length, grip style and diameter.

Driver clubheads come in 421cc and 350cc models; the 350cc model offers your choice of a square face or draw face (2 degrees closed). Standard length is 45.75 for the larger head, 45.5 for the smaller; standard lie is 58 degrees on both models. Lofts go as low as 6.5 degrees for the 350cc right-handed square face; increments go up to 10.9 degrees depending on face angle and right- or left-handedness.

The driver heads are titanium while fairway metals are steel. Fairway clubs are 3, 5, 7 and 9.
