Pinotage walks away with the big cup 27 August 2007

SA Young Wine Award surprise

For the seemingly fading fortunes of local pinotage (in a sea of fashionable shiraz et al) despite the perseverance of its prophets and proponents (and big bank sponsorship), the prestige of the big, very big General Jan Smuts Trophy -  the ultimate accolade of the rather odd ritual of the annual young wine judging -  couldn’t come at a better time.

Probably not since the Morkels of Bellevue (who still produce some of the finest) won the Jan Smuts in 1959 for a young, new wine called pinotage, has the local ‘indigenous’ varietal got such as fillip as with the just announced winners of the 2007 SA Young Wine Awards.

The trophy which goes to the best wine overall in the competition, was awarded to the Wamakersvallei Winery in Wellington for its new-vintage Pinotage. The young wine, also named champion in its category, beat 2026 entries from 183 contestants.

Inevitably, such an unusual winner gets a substantial amount of publicity - for both the winery and winemaker. Not that recognition for its pinotage is foreign to this winery, which has had its La Cave version selected among the Absa Top Ten. The trophy was handed to Wamakervallei’s cellar master Hugo Truter, a fairly recent arrival (right).

Paarl’s Boland Kelder, like a number of other cooperative wineries, scored well too, clinching three trophies, which include the Pietman Hugo trophy for the highest score for the five best entries. A Chenin Blanc and wooded Viognier also won.

Vredendal’s Namaqua Wines won trophies for its red blend and pinotage. Oranjerivier Wine Cellars won trophies for dessert wine and muscadel. Other winners are Kleine Zalze (white blend), Botha Winery (sémillon), Graham Beck Franschhoek (sauvignon blanc), Rooiberg (chardonnay), Bellingham (natural sweet), Avondale (shiraz), Annex Kloof (merlot), Babylon’s Peak (carignan) and Carel Nel (port).
