A jump ring is a small metal ring (usually round, sometimes oval) with a small cut or slit that allows it to open and close.
They're one of the most basic and essential findings in jewelry like the screws and nails of the jewelry world.
Connecting components: e.g. pendants to chains, clasps to necklaces, charms to bracelets.
Extending: joining pieces together to add length.
Finishing ends: attaching to cord ends, tags, or dangles.
Creating chainmaille designs or decorative links.
Made from 304 or 316L stainless steel, which is:
Rust-resistant and corrosion-resistant
Hypoallergenic (ideal for people with sensitive skin)
Won't tarnish or lose color
Stronger and more durable than plated brass or copper
Keep their shape better than softer metals: harder to bend out of shape accidentally.
Jump rings come in many diameters (from about 3mm to over 15mm) and different wire thicknesses (gauges):
Inner diameter: the space inside the ring
Outer diameter: the full width including the wire
Wire gauge: how thick the wire itself is (thicker = stronger, but harder to open)
Common jewelry sizes:
4mm / 5mm / 6mm for small charms and fine chains
79mm for medium pendants and bigger clasps
Thicker gauges (e.g. 1.0mm or 1820 gauge) are stronger for heavy pieces
1 Open jump rings:
Have a single split; you twist to open and close.
Standard for most jewelry connections.
2 Closed jump rings:
Fully soldered shut; cannot be opened.
Used where strength is critical (e.g., to prevent a clasp from pulling open).
3 Double jump rings:
Like two rings wrapped together (like a mini keyring).
Extra security; makes it harder for things to slip out.
Natural steel silver-gray shine (often mirror polished)
Can also find gold-tone, rose gold, or black IP plated stainless steel jump rings
Matte brushed finishes are rarer but possible
Use two pairs of pliers to open/close always twist, don't pull apart sideways.
Stainless steel is tougher than brass or copper it takes a bit more effort to bend.
For critical connections (like a pendant on a heavy chain), consider a soldered or closed ring so it can't open accidentally.
Strong, reliable, and keep jewelry looking new for years.
Affordable but look professional.
Pair well with stainless steel chains, clasps, and other findings for a cohesive look.
