Brassica oleracea Seeds

Broccoli Waltham

Broccoli grows best in mostly sunny locations during the cooler parts of the growing season. Prefers fairly rich soil kept fairly moist. Introduced in 1954, the Waltham broccoli is a widely adapted, drought tolerant variety for autumn planting. Developed to mature in cold weather, it produces a 10 – 20cm diameter head which holds for an extended period. Lateral buds will develop for 6 to 8 weeks after harvest of the main head. Leaves are borne on a low, compact plant having a distinctive slate-green color. Good for freezing. The seeds germinate in 7-14 days and it should be ready to harvest in about 60 to 95 days. The increased popularity of broccoli in the home garden and at Farmers’ Markets is simple to explain. Broccoli is nutritious, delicious raw or cooked, freezes well, and is relatively easy to grow. Originating in the Mediterranean countries of Italy and France, broccoli is a member of the cabbage (or cole) family. Broccoli is probably the single most recognized vegetable for nutritional value. It will remain a staple of our diet for a long time to come. It's a great feeling to grow it yourself!
