Silver Cross Penny Coin, Slabbed and Graded

An English Medieval Hammered Silver Penny (1279 to 1307)

TEdward I Longshanks (12391307) was King of England from 1272 until his death. Nicknamed "Longshanks" for his tall stature, Edward is remembered as a formidable warrior and administrator. He consolidated royal authority, reformed the legal system, and strengthened the English monarchy.

Edward is best known for his campaigns in Wales and Scotland. He conquered Wales in the 1280s, building a series of imposing castles, including Caernarfon and Conwy, and declaring his son the first Prince of Wales. In Scotland, Edward sought to assert overlordship, leading to the Wars of Scottish Independence. His victories earned him the title "Hammer of the Scots," though he faced resistance from figures like William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.

Domestically, Edward was a reformer, instituting legal and administrative changes, including the Model Parliament of 1295. His reign also saw controversial policies, such as the Edict of Expulsion in 1290, which expelled Jews from England. Edwards legacy is that of a powerful, determined monarch who left a lasting imprint on England and its neighbors

Edward introduced these coins as part of his efforts to stabilize and standardize England's currency. First minted in 1279, the coins were part of the broader Edwardian penny series, which remained in use for decades.

These pennies were made of high-quality silver. They featured a bust of Edward I on the obverse, with the inscription EDWAR R ANGL DNS HYB (Edward, King of England, Lord of Ireland). The reverse displayed a long cross with three pellets in each quarter.
