Pumpkin Sugar Pie

If you've ever tried to make a pumpkin pie out of stringy Jack-o'-lantern pumpkins that were left over from Halloween and wondered why it just didn't taste quite right, this variety is for you. There are different types of pumpkins, field pumpkin, and pie pumpkins. Pie pumpkins are smaller than field pumpkins and have a more delicate, smooth flesh. This variety is an old heirloom that has been a staple in recipes for good, old-fashioned pumpkin pie for decades. Fruits are about 15cm tall and weigh 2.7 to 3.6kg. The flesh is very thick and has a lower water content than other varieties making it a very dense flesh. Flesh is a rich orange color and is very smooth with an even texture. The big difference with this variety is the higher sugar content of the flesh, making it perfect for pies. The rind is hard, slightly ribbed and deep orange. Plants are very prolific and can produce 15-25 fruits per vine. Vines like to run and can reach lengths of 9meter or more. If desired, the vines can be trained up a trellis or arbor. It takes 85 days to reach maturity.
