1739 Duit Stad Utrecht
Source: On 5 May 1740, the 650 ton Dutch East Indiaman named the Visch and built in 1732 at the Enkhuizen Shipyard left Texel in Holland bound for Batavia under command of Jan Sikkes.
She arrived at Table Bay in darkness and mistook the light on the shore to be that of Robben Island (fire marked entry in those days at night -No ESKOM!!)
That fire was actually lit by the military having a party at Green Point (Lighthouse-today) The ship then landed on the rocks and a copper cauldron was used to ferry the passengers and specie from ship to shore- some coins were lost in transit (abbreviated- please see Pg 65 Shipwrecks & Salvage in SA - Malcolm Turner) An artist painted the shipwreck scene and kept in history-as shown above . Silver coins have been found on the site as well , some in excellent condition spanning a period from 1619 to 1739.Please see pic (not for sale)
Coin: Worn and corroded but showing the Utrecht emblem.
