Published in Paris by Duchesne in 1761 ( during the reign of King Louis XV ).
A pleasing complete two volume set in very good condition, published during the lifetime of the author Pierre de Marivaux. Full leather contemporary bindings with decorated gilt on spines. All four title labels intact. Traces of gilt on edges of boards. All marbled endpapers and marbled edges. Volume one has an attractive bookplate of Sir Hew Dalrymple, Baronet, of North Berwick, and volume two has been neatly signed by the same person. This the rare augmented third edition, published during the author's lifetime. Sir Hew Dalrymple is probably the second Baronet of that name, a Scottish politician and M.P. His neat signature appears on the reverse of the title page as follows: Dalrymple, North Berwick. Pierre de Marivaux ( 1688 to 1763 ) was a French novelist and dramatist, considered one of the most important French playwrights of the 18th century.
