1791 George 111 Spade Guinea gaming token - Simcox. Year: 1791. Coin weight: 3.9g. Material: Brass. Diameter: 25mm. George III tokens are quite common, however, one made by George Simcox in his brass foundry in Birmingham is a rare find. He never made them to deceive and even went out of his way to alter the counternance of the King. But as they so much resembled a real spade guinea, especially at night in the badly lit streets of London, they were also used to fool tradesmen and cab drivers. For that reason it was common practice to bite the coin to see if it was real - gold being softer than brass would have a slight give when bit. This coin is dated 1791 and has the markings and wording exactly the same as a real spade guinea. Under the bust though is the word "SIMCOX".
