1795-1850 Fanam - Cochin India KM#10

Cochin is situated on the West coast of India (Malabar) very near the southernmost tip in the state of Kerala

It has always been a port of strategic importance and was first colonized by the Portugese in 1500

Vasco da Gama started a Factory there in 1502 , then died and was initially buried there in St Francis Church before his remains were transported back to Lisbon in 1539.

In Roman times, there was already a steady trade between Cochin and the west.

In 1663 Cochin came under Dutch Occupation and remained so for aproximately 100 years until King Hader Ali and Tipu Sultan of Mysore overran the region.

In 1791 , to escape the demands of Mysore, the Raja of Cochin placed himself under British protection. In 1809 , a second treaty strengthened British control of the state.

In 1949, Cochin merged with Travancore to form a new state of Travancore and Cochin which in turn became part of the new state of Kerala in 1956.
