The huge coins were well known in the early years at the Cape of Good Hope after the first British occupation of the Cape. They where known as “Cartwheel” Pennies, because of their enormous size that resemble the wheel of an old cart horse!
The Cartwheel Pennies were a one-year only mintage (in 1797) and are very difficult to get in the better grades cataloguing at over R700.00 in VF. Bar a mark above the head of King George III on the obverse, this coin is in almost VF condition as per the following picture…
A really nice coin.
