1797 Cartwheel Penny Replika
In 1797, if someone asked the question, “Penny for your thoughts?” you’d need a big idea to merit this titanic token. At 38.6mm in diameter, England’s One Penny coin was struck for only one year due to complaints about its cumbersome “cartwheel” size. It was the first copper penny issued and the first British coin to feature Britain’s warrior princess Britannia. It was also struck using coin presses powered by steam—yet another first!
