Info:  The 17th Lancers (Duke of Cambridge's Own) was a cavalry regiment of the British Army, raised in 1759 and notable for its participation in the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War. The regiment was amalgamated with the 21st Lancers to form the 17th/21st Lancers in 1922.
The 17th Lancers Regiment also saw action in the Seven Years War, the American Revolution, as well as the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic Wars.
Deployed to the Crimea in 1854. The regiment, commanded by Captain William Morris, was in the first line of cavalry on the left flank during the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava in October 1854. Later years the Regiment was in India and saw action in the Anglo-Zulu War at the Battle of Ulundi. 
The Second Boer War Battle of Elands River Sept 1901 (Modderfontein) was an engagement between C Squadron and The Boers under the command of Jan Smuts; the Lancers mistakenly assumed the unit was friendly because of their attire. The regiment suffered 29 killed and 41 wounded before surrendering, while Boer losses were just one killed and six wounded.
Since 1759, no less than five Victoria Crosses had been awarded to the Regiment's soldiers up until 1900, the fifth being awarded to Sergeant T Lawrence for his valour in November, 1900.
Condition: Fair, a rescued picture that has been saved and repaired and newly covered on the back of the frame.
