DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION
DESCRIPTION	A lovely 18th CENTURY HAND PAINTED DELFT MANGANESE TILE in excellent condition. The tile is framed in an old black iron frame. The tile has a Biblical theme and was probably originally part of a Biblical panel in a church. It measures 130 x 130 mm and is 1.5 cm thick. The chapter and verse of the Bible which is illustrated on the tile (Matthew 14 verse 6 -) is indicated on the bottom of the tile in script writing. The tile illustrates King Herod promising the daughter of Herodias that he will grant her any wish she desires after she had danced for him on his birthday (she made the wish to be given the head of John the Baptist on a plate and King Herod had to keep his promise). This tile is beautifully and finely painted. You can see the framed tile in the image above and 4 images which describe it further follow. CONDITION	This tile is in very fine and collectable condition. There are no chips on the sides and no damage or cracks to the glaze anywhere. The manganese illustration is beautiful and bright. It is in the best condition of any 18 th century Dutch tile I have ever seen.

NOTES
This is a very collectable tile. It is not often that the illustrations on 18th Century Dutch tiles can be readily identified and this one clearly indicates the Bible verse which is illustrated on it. The condition of the tile is also exceptionally good. The words 'Rot / dam' and 'Restauratie' appear on the back of the tile in pencil which indicates that the tile was probably salvaged from an 18th century church in Rotterdam where it formed part of a Biblical panel after that city was extensively damaged by bombing during WWII (see image of the back of the tile below).

The focal point of the illustration on the tile shown close - up. Note the exceptionally fine hand painting in manganese which shows King Herod and Herodias' daughter. Also note the Bible reference (Matthew 14 verse 6 -) written in script at the base.

The tile was apparently salvaged from an 18th century church in Rotterdam after the extensive bombing which occurred in that city during WWII. It probably formed part of a mural showing Biblical history.
