1802 Netherlands East Indies Batavian Republic 1/16 Gulden
During the Napoleonic wars, the Dutch Government occupied the Cape for the period 1802 to 1806 and Comissioner General de Mist had plans to bring in currency to be minted at the Cape which did not happen although there are sketches of the proposed coinage design in pg 25 of C.L.Engelbrecht "Money in South Africa".
What did happen is that coins were minted for the Batavian Republic that included the Cape and Indonesia which were brought to the Cape and were actually only really circulated by Sir David Baird in 1806 when he took back the Cape for Britain in 1806 to relieve the shortage of currency.
The coin has seen minimal wear and is 16mm in diameter.
There is lustre around the edge and the Obverse shows the three masted East India sailing ship. Inscription reads "Indiae Batavorum" Literal Translation from Latin - Indias of the Batavias (plural ie The Cape and Indonesia were part of a Batavian Republic)
The Reverse shows the Rampant Lion (Mint of Enkhuizen)
