1802 Quarter Ships Gulden XF40

Minted by the short lived pro-Napoleonic Batavian Republic which nationalised the bankrupt VOC at the end of the 1700s and for use at the early Cape. It was the plan of the then Comissioner General Jacob de Mist when the Cape was handed back to the Dutch by the Treaty of Amiens in 1803 by the British only to be reoccupied by the British under Sir David Baird in 1806 after the French Naval Defeat at Trafalgar. These coins were released regardless of political ownership and used at the Cape and came to be known as Cape Guilders.

The Ships Guilder and its fractions (1/2,1/4,1/8,1/16 plus 1/32 copper) were also used in Indonesia at the time and the Cape was regarded as one of the Provinces of the East.
