Describe by many International numismatists as one of the best coin designs ever, the reverse of this sovereign shows a mounted St George slaying the dragon. It was designed by the Italian Benedetto Pistrucci.
With the exception of the extremely rare 1818 Sovereign, this was the first year of issue of the British Gold Sovereign and is a very rare coin that catalogues at R3750.00 in Fine condition and R6000.00 in Very Fine.
(There are varieties of this coin that catalogues at R15 000 in VF, but as I do not have a specialized catalogue I give the lowest values)
Did a British Settler brought this stunning gold coin to South Africa in 1820? We will obviously never know!
Please see the following three pictures and note that the coin has no defects…
The obverse of the coin
The reverse of the coin
You are bidding on an extremely rare full British Gold Sovereign of King George III dated 1820 and catalogued at a minimum value of R3750.00
