An original 1863 Hong Kong 1 Mil bronze coin from the reign of Queen Victoria. This is the desirable no hyphen variety, with the obverse legend reading HONG KONG rather than HONG-KONG, corresponding to KM2.
The coin was struck with a central hole and square inner border to resemble the traditional Chinese cash coins then circulating in southern China. The obverse carries the British colonial inscription and date around the hole, while the reverse features the Chinese characters for Hong Kong and one mil. The VR initials below the crown stand for Victoria Regina.
This early Hong Kong issue was struck in bronze and is an interesting crossover collectible appealing to both British colonial and Asian coin collectors. The unusual square border and central hole make it especially distinctive.
Condition - VF
Moderate wear from circulation with all legends still readable. The square inner border, date and VR remain clear. There is light green verdigris and surface spotting around the central hole and reverse, together with even brown toning and minor marks consistent with age.
