Country: Cape of Good Hope.
Issue Date: November 1874.
Type: Provisional Surcharge.
Base Stamp: 6 Pence Violet (from the "Hope Seated" Rectangular issue).
Overprint: "One Penny." printed in red across the chest of the figure.
Why this stamp exists:
In 1874, the Cape Post Office ran out of the commonly used 1-penny stamps. While waiting for new stock to arrive from London, they authorized a local printer (Saul Solomon & Co. in Cape Town) to take the existing stock of 6 Pence stamps (which were less used) and print "One Penny." over them to fill the shortage.
