Why this exists:
In 1882, the Cape Post Office ran out of the standard ½d stamps. To meet the demand, they took existing stocks of the 3d "Hope Seated" (rectangular) stamp and locally overprinted them with the new reduced value.
Front: The stamp is Used. It has a heavy, barred numeral cancellation (typical of the era), which partially obscures the "One" of the surcharge. The "Hope Seated" design is classic Cape philately.
Back: The watermark "Crown" is visible. The paper shows signs of aging (browning/toning), which is expected for a stamp of this period (over 140 years old).
Perforations: The perforations look reasonably intact, though slightly rough on the right side.
