An attractive 1883 Mauritius Two Cents, issued during the reign of Queen Victoria and catalogued as KM#8. Struck in bronze, this Victorian colonial coin represents the period when Mauritius formed part of the British Empire and provides an appealing addition to a collection of African or British colonial coinage.
The obverse features the crowned and veiled portrait of Queen Victoria facing left, surrounded by the legend VICTORIA QUEEN. Despite circulation wear, the portrait remains readily identifiable, with detail still visible to the crown, hair and facial features.
The reverse has a bold and functional colonial design, with a large numeral 2 occupying the centre. The legend MAURITIUS appears above, while TWO CENTS and the date 1883 complete the denomination and issue details. A beaded border surrounds both sides of the coin.
Mauritius has a particularly interesting numismatic history reflecting successive periods of Dutch, French and British influence. Victorian Mauritius coins have become popular with collectors of African coinage, British Empire issues and 19th-century colonial currency, with the large bronze denominations offering considerable character from genuine circulation.
A pleasing circulated example of this late 19th-century Mauritius issue, displaying an attractive aged bronze appearance and clear denomination and date.

Condition VF
Very Fine condition. Moderate circulation wear is evident, particularly across the higher points of Queen Victoria's portrait and the central numeral on the reverse. The principal design elements, date and denomination remain clear. The surfaces show age-related toning, marks, scratches and areas of darker patination consistent with a circulated bronze coin of this age. Please examine the photographs carefully for exact condition.
