Obverse: Hope standing, front, supporting anchor. On a band, legend above: PROVINCE . OF . SOUTH . AFRICA" and below between stops: "1884". The stops are a cluster of four dots. Round the perimeter African toothed design. In the bottom arm of the cross, a 5-pointed star and in the other three arms the initials: "C-T-S".

Reverse: Within an African toothed design, the Church Temperance Society monogram. Legend on a band: "CHURCH . TEMPERANCE . SOCIETY", cross pattée at the bottom. The stops are a cluster of four dots. Round the perimeter African toothed design. In the bottom arm of the cross, a 5-pointed star and in the other three arms the initials: "C-T-S".

Notes: Based on the belief that drink was responsible for many of societys ills, the temperance movement was a social and political campaign prominent in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Cape of Good Hope Temperance Society was founded in Cape Town in 1832.
