1890 ZAR pattern penny NGC AU50 BN

This coin is a pattern (not a regular circulation issue) struck by Messrs Otto Nolte & Co., Berlin, for the ZAR. They were salesman samples or promotional piece intended to solicit interest in the ZAR starting their own coinage and having them minted by the aforementioned Otto Nolte & Co.  They were probably handed to ZAR state officials or prominent citizens. 

As an historical piece it reminds us how the economic development of ZAR was being recognized from Europe and how the Cape colony and the two Boer republics were encouraged to develop currencies of their own.

This is one of an estimated 100 coins minted.
