In order to increase his popularity in the upcoming elections President Paul Kruger wanted to issue new coins, but not wait for the Pretoria Mint to be completed. He thus contracted the first year(1892) of new ZAR coins to be struck at the German Mint in Berlin. As a result the dies were designed with the European understanding of a wagon, which had a double shaft and wheels of equal size, as opposed to the typical Voortrekker oxwagon which had a single shaft for spanning oxen on either side, and the rear wheels were larger than the front .This error almost cost Paul Kruger the elections and he withdrew the issue quickly, replacing them with coins with the correct designs. As a result only 4327 of these double shaft crowns have been minted.
The coinage of the 1892 ZAR President Kruger Series are popular with collectors as it was the first year of issue and the only year that crowns were minted.Specially the double shaft crown has shown a big increase of catalog value and as from Hern's Handbook has grown from R25 000(UNC)&R12 500(EF)in 2007 to R50 000(UNC)&R25000(EF) on 2011.
The Crown you are bidding on is shown in the pictures below and has a nice dark toning and no obvious flaws and has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation as AU55.Less than 90 coins has received this grade or better.
