William Frederic Fairlie was appointed in 1883 to the Natal Mounted Police as Inspector and seconded to the Natal Border Police as Lieutenant Colonel in 1902 & Retired in 1904 (See scan)
Original Natal Colony Police Commission from 1894 promoting W.F Fairlie to Inspector in the Natal Police Force. Has the Original Signature of of Sir Walter Hutchinson the Governor of Natal & The Colonial Secretaryy . Difficult to find and thus Very Rare
Original Letter from Colonel Dartnell, Chief Commissioner of the Natal Police to W.F Fairlie dated 9 June 1899 before the start of the Boer War in which he talks about the failure of the meeting between Sir Alfred Milner & Paul Kruger in Bloemfontein still hoping that war can be averted also says that the Basutos, Swazi's & Zulus might join in to settle old scores .Dartnell then goes on to say that a force of 50 000 would not be too many incl the 10 000 already present for the lines of communication would be long and the places to be guarded many plus movements of the Natal Police to Nongoma mentioning various men in the Natal Police like Mardell , Maxwell, Mansel , Lyndsay( Typed transcript will be provided)
