Fu-Chien '20 cent' Coin, Slabbed and Graded
A '20 cent' coin from the Fujian(Fukien or Fu-Chien) region of China. These coins were all issued without dates but were in production from 1896 to 1903.
Late Imperial China maintained both a silver and a copper currency system. The copper system was based on the copper cash (wen). The silver system had several units which by the Qing Dynasty were: 1 tael = 10 mace = 100 candareens = 1000 li (silver cash).
In 1889, the Chinese yuan was introduced at par with the Mexican Peso and was subdivided into 10 jiao (角, not given an English name, cf. dime), 100 fen (分, cents), and 1000 wen (文, cash). The yuan was equivalent to 7 mace and 2 candareens (or 0.72 tael) and, for a time, coins were marked as such in English, as indeed is this one(1 mace and 44 Candareens).
Fujian Province (Fu-chien; Postal map spelling: Fukien; Chinese: 福建省) is a province on the coast of southeastern China. Since 1949, Fujian has been split between two separate governments: the vast majority of Fujian province has been governed by the People's Republic of China (PRC); while a number of offshore islands have been governed by the Republic of China (ROC) government in Taiwan. The PRC and ROC have each maintained its own respective Fujian provincial government to administer the portions that it controls. This article describes the specific portion of Fujian governed by the Republic of China. No refunds will be forthcoming however a exchange for a similarly priced item may be negotiated if deemed appropriate(applicable inside the Republic of South Africa only), all shipping fees will be payable by the buyer. As soon as I hand the parcel over to the shipping company I consider it to be the responsibility of said company and the responsibility of the buyer to collect the parcel.
