18ct GOLD MEDAL: Mayor CJH Patmore Fund for Kruger Statue & Voortrekker Tapestries
Hern: 400; Laidlaw: 1223.
18ct gold, 32 mm in diameter weighing 21.7gm.
Hern’s 2008 edition of the Medallions of the Zuid-Afrikaanche Republiek and the Anglo Boer War catalogues this rare medal at R25 000.
The Kruger Genootskap started a fund in Pretoria in June 1954, and a Johannesburg fund under the chairmanship of the Mayor, Councillor C J H Patmore, followed. The object was to provide £22 000- for the moving of the Kruger statue from Pretoria Station to Church Square and £15 000- for the Voortrekker tapestry Fund. The tapestry was to depict the story of the Great Trek.
The Patmore Medal was designed by the artist W H Coetzer who also designed the Voortrekker tapestries. It was sold for £100 and only 100 medals were struck. The dies were subsequently cancelled and presented to the Africana Museum (now MuseumAfrica)
