The Adler Fielding Galleries, at Walbrook, corner Commissioner & Von Brandis Streets, were a very important and exciting art gallery on the Johannesburg scene. In 1957, the galleryt started a regular exhibition programme featuring Gerald Sekoto, Irma Stern, Gordon Vorster, Cecil Skotnes amongst others. They were also instrumental in organisation of the Witwatersrand Art Festival Exhibition at the University of the  Witwatersrand.

"Louis (artist Louis Maqhubela ) used to help me, he took me to art galleries. The one that stands out is the Adler Fielding Gallery , no longer in existence.  It's been a hard struggle for them (black artists), because the temptation is to produce "township" or "airport" art, the stereotyped, stylised art that sells readily and helps artists make a living. " Koloane's quest has been to encourage artists to go beyond this, and to "look into themselves and find their own vocabulary"."

David Koloane (South African artist, he is considered to have been "an influential artist and writer of the apartheid years")
